Data Insight

Patience was George Michael's first album of original material in eight years, and he again wrote and produced it himself. The songs are his own compositions, including 'Amazing' and 'Flawless (Go to the City),' and they reflect his continued role as a self-directed writer-producer. The record mixes upbeat dance-pop with reflective soul, balancing personal and political themes. It confirmed that even after a long gap, Michael remained in control of his own writing and production.

Patience is George Michael's fifth and final studio album, released March 8, 2004 on his own Aegean Records label through Sony BMG. Primarily self-produced and self-written, the album debuted at number one in the UK. 'Shoot the Dog' (track 6) was co-written with Philip Oakey of Human League. The US edition omits tracks 6 and 14.

Frequently Asked Questions Patience

Did George Michael write Patience himself?
Yes. George Michael wrote and produced Patience himself, as he did with his other original albums. It was his first album of new material in eight years. The record continued his practice of full creative control over his songwriting and production.
What is Amazing by George Michael about?
'Amazing' is an upbeat, dance-leaning love song George Michael wrote and produced for Patience. It topped the US Dance Club Songs chart but did not enter the Billboard Hot 100. The track was the album's most commercially successful single internationally.
Did any singles from Patience chart on the Billboard Hot 100?
No. None of the singles from Patience, including 'Amazing' and 'Flawless (Go to the City),' charted on the US Billboard Hot 100. Several reached number one on the US Dance Club Songs chart instead. By 2004 George Michael's mainstream US chart presence had declined sharply.
What genre is George Michael's Patience?
Patience blends pop, dance, and soul. It moves between upbeat club-oriented tracks like 'Amazing' and 'Flawless' and slower, introspective material. The mix reflects the range Michael had developed across his solo career.
How long was the gap before George Michael released Patience?
Patience arrived in 2004, eight years after Older in 1996, making it his first album of original material in that span. Songs from the Last Century in 1999 was a covers record rather than new songwriting. The long gap was shaped by personal and legal events in Michael's life.
How well did Patience sell?
Patience sold around four million copies worldwide and was certified 2x Platinum in the UK. It reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. US sales were modest at roughly 381,000 copies as of 2006.
Data note: Track listing is the full UK standard edition (14 tracks). The US release omits tracks 6 ('Shoot the Dog') and 14 ('Patience Pt. II').
