Data Insight

American Beauty/American Psycho is credited to all four members of Fall Out Boy, with Pete Wentz on lyrics and Patrick Stump on music, plus outside co-writers and producers. Built around big, sample-driven hooks, it gave the band the arena-rock smash Centuries.

American Beauty/American Psycho is the sixth studio album by Fall Out Boy, released in January 2015 on Island Records and produced by Jake Sinclair, Michael Fonseca, and Ilsey Juber. It is the band's most pop-oriented and commercially successful release, drawing on funk, electronica, and arena pop production in a further departure from the emo-pop punk origins. Stump and Wentz wrote all material; 'Uma Thurman,' 'Centuries,' and 'Immortals' (written for the Big Hero 6 soundtrack) were the principal singles. 'Centuries' sampled Suzanne Vega's 'Tom's Diner' and spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 193,000 first-week sales and has been certified double platinum in the United States; 'Immortals' reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100. American Beauty/American Psycho is the band's most commercially successful album and the clearest demonstration of how far the pop expansion from Take This to Your Grave had traveled by 2015. The album's commercial peak reflects the full maturation of the band's pop instincts, a 12-year evolution from the indie emo debut to arena pop spectacle that maintained the Stump/Wentz creative partnership while expanding its sonic range to encompass virtually every strand of contemporary commercial music.
