Data Insight

Halcyon is where Ellie Goulding establishes herself as a working co-writer rather than a fronted voice. She holds a writing credit on eleven of the thirteen standard tracks, the large majority alongside producer Jim Eliot, who wrote and produced the album's spine including 'Anything Could Happen,' 'Halcyon,' 'Only You,' and 'Joy.' The exception is 'Hanging On,' a cover of Active Child written by Patrick James Grossi and Ariel Rechtshaid. On tracks where outside producers steer the sound, 'Figure 8' (Jonny Lattimer with Monsta and Mike Spencer), 'Explosions' (John Fortis), 'Dead in the Water' (Starsmith), and 'I Need Your Love' (Calvin Harris), Goulding still keeps a co-writing credit, so her name runs through nearly the entire composer column.

Halcyon is the second studio album by English singer Ellie Goulding, released on 5 October 2012 through Polydor Records. Written largely in the aftermath of a breakup, it moves away from the folk-leaning sound of her debut toward a darker electropop palette built on layered vocals, synths, and heavy percussion. Goulding co-wrote eleven of the thirteen standard tracks, most of them with producer Jim Eliot of the duo Kish Mauve, who shaped the album's core sound. The record produced the singles 'Anything Could Happen,' 'Figure 8,' and 'Explosions,' and the closing track 'I Need Your Love' paired her with Calvin Harris. It debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart and later climbed to number one in January 2014 on the back of the reissue, becoming one of the best-selling British albums of the decade in the UK.
