Frank is the debut studio album by Amy Winehouse, released in October 2003 on Island Records in the UK and produced primarily by Salaam Remi and Commissioner Gordon. It is a jazz, soul, and R&B album that introduced Winehouse as a fully formed lyrical voice at age 19, drawing on the classic female singer-songwriter tradition (Dinah Washington, Carole King, Sarah Vaughan) while writing with a confessional directness about relationships, substance use, and the music industry that was unusual for a debut of its era. Winehouse wrote or co-wrote the majority of the tracks; 'Stronger Than Me,' a song about an emotionally dependent boyfriend who Winehouse observes has reversed conventional gender roles in their dynamic, was the lead single and won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song in 2004, an unusually significant recognition for a debut album track. The album reached number 13 on the UK Albums Chart and received critical attention that significantly outpaced its commercial performance; reviewers consistently noted that Winehouse's compositional and vocal maturity bore no relationship to her age. Frank was not released in the United States until after Back to Black had established Winehouse as a global commercial phenomenon, at which point it was certified gold in the UK and found a wider audience it had not reached on original release. The album's title reflects both Winehouse's characteristic directness and the influence of Frank Sinatra's interpretive approach to lyric. It stands as the opening document of a career that would prove to be one of the most artistically significant and personally tragic of its generation.
