Keys took executive-producer duties and co-wrote across the record with collaborators including Mark Batson, Swizz Beatz, Illangelo, Jimmy Napes, and Pharrell Williams, writing roughly 30 songs in about ten days during 2014 sessions at Jungle City and Oven Studios in New York. The writing leans confessional and topical, pushing past radio convention into spoken-word interludes and frank songs about identity, family, and social struggle. Blended Family (What You Do for Love) builds its hook around a sample of Edie Brickell & New Bohemians' What I Am, while Girl Can't Be Herself and Holy War carry the album's themes of self-acceptance and conflict.
Alicia Keys' sixth studio album, released November 4, 2016. Here is a politically engaged, guitar-forward record that drew heavily from hip-hop influences and soul, featuring several interludes alongside full songs. Track 6, 'She Don't Really Care / 1 Luv,' interpolates Roy Ayers and A Tribe Called Quest among others. 'Blended Family (What You Do for Love)' features ASAP Rocky and samples Edie Brickell. Wu-Tang Clan members RZA, Inspectah Deck, and Raekwon are co-writers on 'The Gospel.' The North American standard edition runs 16 tracks.
