Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987, widely credited with bringing grunge and alternative rock into the mainstream with their landmark 1991 album Nevermind. Led by singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter Kurt Cobain alongside bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, the band's raw, melodic sound and confessional lyrics resonated with a generation and permanently shifted the direction of popular music. Their career ended abruptly with Cobain's death in April 1994, cementing their legacy as one of the most influential rock bands of all time.
Kurt Cobain wrote virtually every Nirvana song — lyrics, melodies, and chords alike. Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl were central to the band's sound as performers but hold almost no songwriting credit. The catalog is a rare case of a culturally massive band built almost entirely on one songwriter's vision.
